Vaughans Stream Team Update – Community Planting Day
🌿 Join Us for a Tree Planting Day in Long Bay – Sunday 16th August, 10am – 2pm
Come Plant, Connect, and Create Change
Get your hands in the soil while making a real difference for our community and the environment! We’re hosting a special ecological restoration planting day at Awaruaika/Vaughan’s Stream, where we’ll be planting 1,800 native plants to restore this precious waterway. Followed by a BBQ for volunteers afterwards thanks to New World Long Bay and Shore Friends!

Long Bay Badminton
A fantastic bunch of people are now enjoying badminton on Sunday nights from 8pm – 9.30pm at the Long Bay College gym. It’s a great way to meet new locals, get a workout and have fun! A huge thanks to one of our star residents – Octavia – for managing the badminton nights! Also thanks to November Eatery and Long Bay Surf Club for providing spot prizes. Brought to you by LBRA with support via a grant from Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.
Long Bay Community Garden Survey and Design
We’re excited to share that our proposed Long Bay Community Garden has received funding from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board to create a master plan concept design!
The idea of a community garden has come up frequently at our annual AGM’s. So we are incredibly excited to share that your voices and ideas are being turned into action.
We’ve run a survey which will shape the vision for the community garden, and have submitted an expression of interest for use of the proposed site. If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts. Your input will directly inform the design brief given to our landscape designer.

Based on initial feedback we’ve also met our designer on the proposed site along with a number of other very interested and keen participants, to start shaping the design with our amazing Maeva driving this initiative forward. Watch this space!
Long Bay College Open Day BBQ
On a very chilly Wednesday July 22nd afternoon & evening, Long Bay Residents’ Association board members and Shore Friends crew teamed up to run the BBQ at the Long Bay College Open Day. About 350 sausages were cooked and served to prospective students and their parents, as well as some hungry school tour guides & teachers! Thanks to New World Long Bay for donating the food and the Long Bay College leadership team for the invite, a great win-win opportunity to connect and serve 🙂 Thanks Monika, John, Rodney, Robert and Gareth for volunteering.
Piripiri Point Drive Speed Calming Measures and Berm Protection
The publicised improvements to Piripiri Point Drive were completed by Auckland Transport and is an excellent improvement to curb undesirable activities in the areas.
However, the Long Bay Residents’ Association is continuing to advocate for further measures to be taken per the feedback provided to the “Have Your Say” for this work, as a number of underlying issues are unlikely to be addressed by the completed work. Please get in touch if you’d like to be involved in additional plans.
Long Bay Halo – Predator Free Update
There’s been lots of action in the predator control space, with the RestoreHB pest animal coordinator Julia massively increasing momentum, with new lines, traps/bait stations and volunteer coordination. Mid winter August is an active time so please bait those traps! For our residents with tunnels/T-Rex traps, we’re planning to have a volunteer visit you during August. If you would like to manage your own traps, please let us know. We have spot prizes for people reporting results in August, so please scan your QR code and log your catch/no-catch to be in to win! We need to know that traps are actively being managed. If bait is being taken but you’re not catching anything, perhaps try adding a mouse trap behind the T-Rex trap. Get in touch if you’d like us to provide further guidance and/or some Pic’s Peanut Butter Waste (for rats not humans!) email longbayra@gmail.com.

Quarterly Community Clean Up
We held a successful cleanup in June 2026 (photo below). Thanks to all those volunteers who joined us and made new connections with locals, especially the students from Long Bay College! LBRA Board Activities
- Board and Governance
- Board Meetings: Meetings were held each month.
- Treasurer’s Reports: Finances move in a positive direction, particularly with receipt of grants payments & regular board ratification of expenses.
- Constitution & Incorporated Societies Act: Constitution Work is now completed and IRD non-profit status confirmed, and guidance received.
- Association Insurance: The board approved Management Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance to cover event and operational risks, which has now been purchased and is in place.
- Board Members: We farewelled Ayden, thanking him for all his excellent efforts! We are on the lookout for additional volunteers.
- Storage & IT: We paid to increase our Google Workspace storage allocation as our digital assets increase.
- Community Engagement and Events
- Badminton: Social community badminton is underway! See the article above for more.
- Barista Event: Looking to run further events at Kinfolk similar to the previous ones.
- Long Bay Market: Presence with flags and flyers.
- Street Party / Community Heroes Day: North Shore Neighbourhood Support has put street parties on hold for winter.
- Community Football: LBRA secured new bibs sponsored by Matt Corin Realty, thanks Matt!
- BBQ at Long Bay College Open Day: LBRA ran the BBQ at the July event with support from Shore Friends and New World Long Bay.
- Community Safety & Issues
- Piripiri Point Drag Strip/Burnout Zone: Further notice of incidents and ongoing discussions with Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Police. Awaiting further liaison for additional changes, and implementation of a CCTV initiative.
- LBRA CCTV Initiative: A local board grant for CCTV in Long Bay was approved in June; board accepted funding and will proceed with policies/procedures and installation planning over the coming months.
- Parking & Road Safety:
- Windlass/Te Oneroa Way: Auckland Transport advised it would monitor Windlass and Pennant Streets for six months from May; LBRA will hold further advocacy until monitoring concludes.
- Glenvar Ridge Road Cycle Lanes: Concerns raised about confusing signage and cyclist–pedestrian conflicts; lodged with Auckland Transport for clarification.
- E-scooters & E-bikes: Board discussed accidents and near-misses; Board members engaged village Long Bay businesses on signage gaps and education on safe riding. Communication with Long Bay College around education and Police involvement related to the issues.
- Neighbourhood Support: All board members encouraged to sign up with North Shore Neighbourhood Support as members or street coordinators to strengthen local safety networks. Residents should sign up too 🙂
- Communication with Auckland Council and Auckland Transport: A number of incidents and requests around parking, illegal dumping and compliance raised with local authorities.
- Environmental Initiatives
- Long Bay Halo – Predator Free NZ project continues, trap rollout, and further upgraded traps including AT220 (Automatic Traps), Flipping Timmies, volunteers coordination and future planning.
- Vaughans Stream Corridor: Regeneration efforts are ongoing via the Vaughans Stream Team, Working Bees held each month, and Planting Day on 16th August 2026. Please volunteer.
- Community Garden: design work started for a community garden / EnviroHub in Long Bay. If you’d like to be involved in managing/running a community garden, please email us and/or respond to the survey. See article above.
- Rain Gardens & Waste: Rubbish audit from March clean-up informed advocacy with HBLB on construction waste; board discussed rain garden education and waste management workshop ideas.
- Partnerships & Local Engagement
- Hibiscus and Bays Local Board (HBLB): Regular engagement on grants, CCTV, community garden, and local safety issues; next HBLB grant accountability form due 30 August 2026.
- Restore Hibiscus and Bays: Ongoing collaboration on predator control and stream restoration; LBRA attended RestoreHB monthly drinks and events. Collaboration on funding opportunities, and more!
- Ongoing collaboration Long Bay College, Long Bay Primary, North Shore Neighbourhood Support, Te Hōnonga a Iwi Restoring Rosedale Park, Mountains to Sea, Trash Free Taiaotea, Viranda/Long Bay Village, Long Bay Village Market, and other local groups.
- Village & Business Engagement: Ongoing communication with sponsors, businesses and village management.
- Sponsorship & Fundraising
- Grants from HBLB received for Community Garden Design and CCTV initiatives. A huge thank you to Hibiscus and Bays Local Board for supporting our efforts!
- Sponsorship packages for the 2026/27 financial year are open and up for renewal with most existing sponsors expressing interest to continue. Benefits are premium exposure to local residents through exclusive promotion via multiple channels; online, print and in-person. Email longbayra@gmail.com for more details.
- Further funding opportunities have been identified. Reach out if you’d like to assist on applications.
- Infrastructure & Advocacy
- Vaughans Road Closure: Further information related to the Glenvar/East Coast Road and Okura River Road upgrades, that impact Vaughans Road has been received. Pending further advocacy and advice. Noted that Vaughans Road has been resealed for the full length of the road, so is in a much better state currently.
- Parking & Road Markings: Continued advocacy for yellow lines at various locations including Windlass/Te Oneroa; AT monitoring in place until late 2026 for that specific location. Residents are regularly voicing concerns.
- Communication and advocacy Preparations for an alcohol ban in Long Bay public areas remain in progress.

Community Activities
There are community activities on the calendar and we’re looking at adding more into the mix! Currently we have:
- Walking Group: Saturdays at 7.15am meet in front of Long Bay Surf Club.
- Football: Mondays at 6pm – meet at Ashley Turf, all skills/ages welcome.
- Badminton: Sundays at 8pm – Long Bay College Gym.
- Run the Bays Club: Mondays at 5.50pm – meet at Long Bay Surf Club.
- Mums & Dads Meetup: Fridays 10am at November Eatery/Cafe.
- Vaughans Stream Team Working Bees: 3rd Sunday of each month 10 – 12 noon meet opposite Dynamic Physio.
- Community Cleanups: 19th September, 19th December.
- Book Buddy Sewing Group: This group has now moved to Browns Bay.
- Cooking Classes: we’re actively looking for volunteers – reach out if you’re keen.
- English Conversation Sessions: Mondays 10 – 11:30am at Long Bay Baptist Church.
- Weekly Ladies coffee group: Thursdays 10.15 to 12 noon at Long Bay Baptist Church.
- Wider Horizons Lunch Club: Monthly on the last Friday – Long Bay Baptist Church. Open to anyone over 65 years.
