Road Safety and Speed Issues

Long Bay Residents’ Association has been addressing the issue regarding road safety for the past 4 years with Auckland Transport, with additional input from Erica Stanford (local MP) an the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.

This has been a very long and often frustrating process. However, recently, Auckland Transport conducted an investigation into the issues we have raised. The following is the result of the investigation: The Board will be discussing whether to continue to pursue this matter at our next Board meeting.

Further to our email to you on 19 March 2019 we have now completed our investigation into your concerns regarding vehicles speeding on Te Oneroa Way. Thank you for your patience while we looked into this matter and compiled this response for you.

With the presence of the planted berm and thereby restricted visibility, drivers are expected to slow their speeds accordingly. Looking at the available speed counts from February 2019, we have found that the majority (85th percentile) speed on Te Oneroa Way is 49.9km/h for vehicles going uphill, and 53km/h for vehicles going downhill. Both of these speeds are not considered high when compared to other arterial roads throughout the region.

While we do understand your concerns, given the issues relating to construction vehicles speeding is temporary, we are unable to justify any permanent measures and consider that police enforcement is the best approach to mitigate this issue.

We understand this may not be the outcome desired, however we trust this provides clarification as to the reasons we are unable to justify changes.

Kind regards
