Hi LBRA members and locals,
Welcome to our latest update – covering June and July. A few of the board members have had some deserved time off, but still plenty to report back on! If you can, please pencil in our Vaughans Stream Team working bee on Sunday 17th August at 10am, Movie Night on Friday 22nd August at 6.30pm (tickets available), our Community Cleanup on Saturday 20th September at 9.30am, and note our upcoming Incorporated Society Act requirements we’ll confirm at our AGM in October. Also great to see the new Jetts Run Club on Mondays 6pm from Long Bay Surf Club! More details follow.
Major Activities/Initiatives:
Long Bay College Open Day – BBQ
Long Bay Residents’ Association assisted with the BBQ at the Long Bay College Open Day, with Rotary Browns Bay helping out. It is always a very worthwhile engagement and great to see the popularity of the college, with a steady stream of parents and students attending. Thanks to Rotary Browns Bay for joining us! Long Bay College passed on their thanks:
Long Bay Predator Halo – Project Update
Thanks to all those who have joined our Restore Hibiscus and Bays and Long Bay Residents’ Association collective effort to protect our native environment through the Long Bay Predator Free project, with funding from Predator Free NZ. Here’s a quick update on what we’ve achieved so far and how you can continue to support the mahi (work)!
Over the past several months, we’ve made great progress:
- 62 Traps have been set up across Long Bay
- 60 total catches have been recorded, comprised of 22 rats, 37 mice, and 1 possum
We’ve even had one resident catch 8 rats in the span of the last 10 days of July!
We’re continuing our rollout of traps to ensure we get the desired coverage, so if you have completed forms but haven’t heard from us, we will be in touch. Feel free to reach out if you have spotted rats recently!
As we are in August now, for those who have traps, please continue to bait & check them when you can, as this can be one of the busiest times of year for rat activity, and be sure to scan the QR codes on the traps or follow this link: longbay.nz/trap to record your catches, even if you have not caught anything yet, as this too helps us out to track activity.
You can find our project information sheet with handy hints and tips here: longbay.nz/predator-halo
Are you or a neighbour interested? Fill in this form: longbay.nz/pestconsent and send it via email to simon@restorehb.org.nz and/or longbayra@gmail.com.
Your efforts are making a real difference. Every trap checked and every predator caught brings us closer to a safer home for our native wildlife.

Vaughans Stream Team Update – Regenerating Vaughans Stream Corridor
With the weather against us in June a few hardy souls showed up and took a warmer option with a coffee at November Cafe to discuss forward plans. In July the weather was more suitable and the brave volunteers dealt to the Pampass Grass and Gorse, which is a tough and scratchy task, well done to all those involved!
Our next working bee is Sunday 17th August, please meet across the road from Dynamic Physio. If it’s your first time joining in, please email your name and mobile number to longbayra@gmail.com saying you are interested in helping with the Vaughan’s Stream project, and we’ll add you to our WhatsApp group for communications, or you can join by the invite at longbay.nz/vst.

Vaughans Road Closure Update
A summary follows based on information provided by Alexis Poppelbaum, Chair, Local Board – thank you Alexis!
In mid-July, the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board heard back from Auckland Transport (AT) on the outcome of the recent consultation on proposed upgrades to Vaughans Road and Okura River Road. Thanks to all those who submitted and provided really useful insights, as well as those who attended the public meetings.
Despite the challenges with the whole situation that led to this point (previous plans being ‘lost’ and leading to patchwork fix proposals of only $2M and the local board putting an extra $600K towards), AT’s presentation left local board members being somewhat impressed. AT has heard the community’s extensive feedback and concerns, and they are working hard on how to meaningfully solve the concerns, including those at the Okura River Road intersection specifically about visibility which is a change in position as over the years this has called for to be investigated about 3 times and the outcome determined that there was no line of sight issues.
The good news – no promises yet, but AT are working hard behind the scenes to see what possible other funds they can try to tap in to, and we will know more in mid-August about this. Depending on how this goes, the final proposal could come to the local board in September for approval, but we’ll keep you updated on all of this.
Alexis was going to call for a speed reduction investigation for Vaughans Road if it opened anyway, but the good news is that if the proposed works to open the road go ahead, AT will be putting a temporary reduction in place until this process can be initiated (60kmph down to 50, and 50 areas down to 40). There was also comfort by their intentions to closely monitor speeds, car counts, and to work with Police.
The summary of feedback/presentation can be found on the link below by searching ‘Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Workshop’, 15 July 2025 meeting: https://infocouncil.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/

Incorporated Society Act Reregistration
Our Long Bay Residents’ Association must reregister under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 to remain an incorporated society. This year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 15th October will be an important milestone and our last AGM before the deadline to confirm the changes.
At the AGM, members will have the opportunity to:
- Confirm whether we will proceed with reregistration.
- Approve any updates or changes to our constitution so it meets the new legal requirements.
We’re currently preparing our new constitution, and will be providing it for review by members soon, prior to the AGM. By attending and deciding these matters at our AGM, we can avoid the need for a last-minute special general meeting next year. We look forward to your input and support in ensuring a smooth transition for our society.
