Member Update May 2025

Hi LBRA members and locals,

Welcome to our May 2025 update, we’ve been working hard with lots of activities, community events, and advocacy in April and May and a call out to the two Have Your Say’s that are currently running for the Streamview Way Youth Park at and the Vaughans Road improvements.

Major Activities/Initiatives:

Predator Free NZ Funding: Long Bay Predator Halo

Project Update: since getting PFNZ funding Restore Hibiscus and Bays + the Long Bay Residents’ Association have been busy rolling out tunnels/traps and information. We’ve installed 30+ tunnels/T-Rex traps, 4 DOC 200 traps, a Flipping Timmy and are continuing the trap rollout! If you have problems with rats or possums please contact us to be prioritised. Our Long Bay Predator Halo project is now up on Trap.nz so if you are an enthusiast please join the project. For more detailed information on the Long Bay Predator Halo see https://longbay.nz/predator-halo.

Imagine: A Restored and Regenerating Vaughans Stream Corridor!

The Vaughans Stream Team working bees have started and we had 25 keen volunteers at the last one in May dealing to the exotic intruder trees around the smaller pond. Our next working bee is Sunday 15th June, please meet across the road from Dynamic Physio. If you can’t go along to this one, there will be more so email your name and mobile number to longbayra@gmail.com saying you are interested in helping with the Vaughan’s Stream project, and we’ll add you to our WhatsApp group for communications, or you can join via scanning the invite QR Code (see image), or by visiting the invite link at https://bit.ly/lbvsteam.

Protect Our Community

Our work continues on this initiative with a report of outputs formed from our prior community meeting in March and provided to our Hibiscus and Bays Local Board for feedback and next steps. Those steps include consultation with the Auckland Council Crime Prevention Project Lead and meetings with Police and Auckland Transport. The issues continue with burnouts/”boy racers” including one crash into a street light at Piripiri Point Drive causing it to be removed, ongoing rubbish dumping requiring regular action by the council. One of the key messages is for all residents to report issues. If they are actively occurring/immediate/urgent please call 111 or if it is non-urgent 105 providing appropriate details such as location, time, vehicle license plates, and description of people involved. You can also report non-urgent issues online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105. The more calls are logged, the more attention/responses we will get!

Vaughans Road Closure Update

Community consultation is on now until 23rd June 2025 on this important local matter, please make sure you have your say at  https://haveyoursay.at.govt.nz/vaughans-road-okura.

We’ve provided a longer update on our website relating to AT’s May HBLB information update about the ongoing Auckland Transport plans for Vaughans Road.

The plan focuses on seven areas of localised widening to meet a restricted budget of $2.6 million. The goal is for the budget to be available July 2025 – 2026 for construction, dependent on consultation feedback and other aspects. The road will be closed until construction is complete. Rain Gardens Campaign

We recently published an article in the Focus magazine; Rain gardens are essential to Long Bay infrastructure, helping to filter rainwater runoff before it reaches our waterways. These specially designed gardens absorb and treat stormwater, reducing pollutants and preventing flooding. They play a crucial role in the Awaruku and Vaughans Stream catchments, where natural water quality treatments have been integrated into the streetscape and our open space network. You can find the article on our website.

Quarterly Community Cleanup

Our next cleanup is Saturday 21st June – we’ll work to remove any litter/rubbish from around the streets and rain gardens, hope to see you there – meet 9.30am in the square by New World!
