Vaughans Road Closure Update

The Vaughans Road Closure has taken a number of unexpected turns, with a recent update from the Local Board chair Alexis Poppelbaum documenting the following at the 23-Sep-2025 meeting:

  • A recent admission by Auckland Transport that increased traffic would cause pavement failure leading to another road closure, so the proposed publicly consulted changes are not viable. Given the feedback points over time which included concerns on the road surface, the question of why this wasn’t identified earlier in the process has been raised to the Auckland Transport CEO by the local board Chair.
  • A fundamental error in the way feedback was categorised in the report Auckland Transport provided to the local board in July 2025, with the error identified by a resident.
  • An update remedying the error showing a change from support to opposition to opening the road, with significantly more feedback from Okura (60%) versus Long Bay (19%) residents.

To share your feedback/concerns on this matter, please email us, so we can provide community feedback to the Local Board, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport.

Long Bay Halo – Predator Free Update

Long Bay Halo – Vaughans Stream Team Update

At the Vaughans Stream Team working bee on Sunday 21st September we rolled up our sleeves and tackled some pesky invaders to help restore the Vaughans Stream corridor. Here’s what we did:

  • Targeted pampas grass (that tall, feather flowered cutty grass that loves to take over!) and made sure we didn’t disturb similar looking native Toetoe.
  • Removed gorse, the prickly shrub that’s a bit too friendly with our native plants.
  • Worked together enjoying great company and community spirit.
  • Took another step toward a healthier, greener Vaughans Stream ecosystem.

A big thanks to all the keen volunteers who joined – that pampas grass is tough to take down! Our next targets will definitely be easier, and we’re looking forward to next year’s planting season.

Next working bee: 10am, Sunday 19th October, meet opposite Dynamic Physio. Let’s keep the momentum growing! 🌳Keen to join? Our group is on WhatsApp, visit: https://longbay.nz/vst

Quarterly Community Cleanup

A big thanks to all the wonderful locals who joined our Long Bay Community Cleanup on Saturday, 20th September!

Together we cleaned Te Oneroa Way and the Vaughans Stream corridor, filling multiple large bags and clearing out some unusual finds: including a hubcap 🛞, a lone shoe 👟, and big pieces of plastic – now safely out of our rain gardens. The crew connected afterwards with a coffee at Kinfolk.

We’d love to see you at our next event: the Christmas Community Cleanup, meet outside New World, 9.30am on Saturday, 13th December 🎄✨ – a perfect way to end the year giving  back to the community.Want to stay in the loop? Join our WhatsApp group here: https://longbay.nz/cleanup.

Long Bay Chinese Association Collaboration

Following ongoing partnerships and collaboration with Long Bay Chinese Association 龙湾华人协会, we are looking for an enthusiastic Long Bay resident who could be a representative for both the Long Bay Residents’ Association and Long Bay Chinese Association. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer – please email us.

On Sunday 28th September, board members Gareth and Maeva attended the Long Bay Chinese Association AGM 2025 and Moon Cake Festivities. It was an amazing presentation of Chinese culture and a great way to connect with the Chinese community and local organisations & residents.

Book Buddy Sewing Group looking for volunteers!

Our dedicated Long Bay Book Buddy sewing group is looking for two more keen residents to commit on a regular basis, Thursday’s at 1pm with their amazing initiative, a Rotary Browns Bay project.

Since beginning in 2023 the group has made 720 backpacks, 160 art bags, 235 pencil cases, and, in response to requests from schools, 40 sensory mats for neuro-challenged children. Four schools have received ten sensory mats each and these are very much appreciated by the schools. They help the child to learn one word at a time. The children have to read for 50 days to earn a backpack or pencil case and literacy competency in the participating schools has increased markedly. The backpacks are treasured by the children and they work hard to earn them. They’ve had approximately twelve sewers who come to the sewing groups, and enjoy companionship together and having a purpose in their senior lives.

Please email longbayra@gmail.com if you think this might be for you.

Individuals and various community groups have donated funds, stationery, books, drink bottles, beanies and sun hats to go into the packs & pencil cases – please contact us if you’d like to donate.

Sponsorship

Over the last few months we have been on a sponsorship drive to provide funds to power our community activities. We’d like to announce another amazing local business that has come on board as a sponsor, be sure to visit Bukhara, and check out their promotional spotlight!
